What is a controlled environment, and why should you care: A well-defined and clearly identified controlled environment can help reduce unnecessary service interruptions while maintaining a safe work environment for all.

How to create, define, and maintain them: Understanding the characteristics of a controlled environment.

Communication is key: Who needs to know what—ensuring the right information is available to those who need it through cooperation between workers, operators, and site owners/managers.

Keeping it real: Safe work practices within controlled environments.

Tower Rescue Tactics: Methods, Systems, and Critical Considerations

This presentation provides a comprehensive overview of self-rescue, partner-rescue, and team-based tower rescue strategies. Participants will learn to select and apply appropriate techniques for real-world scenarios, focusing on the safe and efficient transport of individuals to the ground for medical transfer. The session underscores the importance of pre-incident preparation, equipment planning, and hazard mitigation. Attendees will gain a practical understanding of casualty load-transfer methods, hauling system efficiencies, and techniques to maintain control and safety while minimizing physical effort. Through the sharing of rescue system drawings and detailed explanations, participants will gain an awareness-level understanding of rigging rope-based systems on vertical and inclined planes. The goal is to provide a stronger foundation and greater confidence in executing effective tower rescue operations.

Wildlife Hazards & Distracted Driving on the Job

Distracted driving and wildlife hazards are significant risks for employees who drive as part of their work. This interactive workshop combines insights from the Traffic Injury Research Foundation’s (TIRF) Drop It And Drive® program with practical road safety information to help organizations better understand and manage these risks. Participants will explore common workplace and driving distractions using easy tools to identify risk factors and implement effective distraction-related policies. Through science, real stories, and interactive exercises, the session highlights behaviours that increase risk and their real-world consequences. The workshop also shares key facts about wildlife–vehicle collisions in Canada and practical tips to help drivers better avoid or respond safely to wildlife on the road.

This session reviews bolting requirements under CSA S37-24, including key updates from the 2018 edition and guidance on pre-tensioning versus securing fasteners against loosening. Field examples will highlight common installation failures involving Turn-of-Nut and Direct Tension Indicators (DTIs).
